Background of the study
Proverbs are an integral part of Hausa oral tradition, encapsulating wisdom, cultural values, and social norms. Traditional storytellers in Kano use proverbs to convey moral lessons and historical narratives, relying on established semantic conventions to impart meaning. This study evaluates the semantics of Hausa proverbs by analyzing their lexical structure, metaphorical content, and contextual usage. Ethnographic observations and recorded storytelling sessions reveal that proverbs are rich in polysemy and are often imbued with multiple layers of meaning that depend on the listener’s cultural background and situational context (Abdullahi, 2023). The research explores how these semantic properties are maintained or transformed through oral transmission, and how modern influences such as media and urbanization may be altering traditional interpretations. By combining qualitative discourse analysis with comparative methods, the study aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the semantic frameworks underlying Hausa proverbs, contributing to both linguistic theory and cultural preservation (Usman, 2024).
Statement of the problem
Despite the recognized importance of proverbs in Hausa culture, there is limited systematic research on their semantic properties among traditional storytellers in Kano. Preliminary findings indicate that the meanings of proverbs are becoming ambiguous due to modernization and inconsistent usage. This study seeks to document and analyze these semantic aspects to support effective cultural transmission.
